From a reader -

Dear Gabrielle,

According to the tabulation, you are one of those who voted FOR this dangerous bill, H. R. 1955.        Why?

From what I have heard about it, it can be subject to such abuse as was generated by McCarthy's witch hunts of days gone by, only worse.

What safeguards are built in to protect our freedoms - speech, assembly, etc...?

Government agents will be the terrorists.  We will not need others.  Our freedoms are quickly eroding.

You will have to live in this new dark age.

At 79, I will be dead in the near future (days, months, or years) and will not have too long to deal with this.  In the meantime, I ask questions for those who may survive.

Please answer with your reasons for voting for this bill, and what protections are built in for the average American.

Your faithful supporter,

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

The first prisioners arrived at Guantanamo on 01/11/2002.

This Friday, 01/11/2008, wearing an orange ribbon (or anything orange) will indicate your support for closing Guantanamo.

This insult to American values and American justice must be closed.  This, and other deeds like it, have destroyed our world reputation, and our democracy is being destroyed from within.  No terrorists needed.

I signed the pledge.  From a reader.

----------------------------------------------------------

This is a letter I sent to Rep Giffords in reference to the Mental Haelth Parity Act of 2007.  It has 273 cosponsors in the House.  It needs to be passed now!  Phone calls would be most effective at this late date.   Please help me get this important legislation passed.  You may use some of the items in the letter as talking points.

Dear Rep. Giffords:

I am writing to urge you support passage of mental illness insurance

parity legislation before the 2007 congressional session ends.  As you

know, this important legislation (S 558) passed the Senate by a unanimous

vote on September 18.  A separate House version (HR 1424) has 273

cosponsors and has cleared 3 House committees and is now awaiting action

by the full House.

With only a few weeks remaining in this year's congressional session, it

is critical that Congress come to an agreement on this bill so that it can

be passed and sent on to the President before the end of 2007.  I urge you

to contact Speaker Pelosi and Minority Leader Boehner and urge them to

press for an agreement between the House and Senate bills that is

acceptable to the President.  I urge you to support the efforts of your

colleagues Representatives Patrick Kennedy and Jim Ramstad to get an

agreement on HR 1424 that can get through both the House and Senate and be

signed into law this year.  The time has come to pass legislation to

ensure that mental illnesses are covered in health plans on the same terms

and conditions as all other illnesses.

I want to remind you that:

 *  Untreated mental illness costs American businesses, government and

families more than $80 billion annually in lost productivity and

unemployment, broken lives and broken families, emergency room visits,

homelessness and unnecessary use of jails and prisons,

 *  Mental illnesses such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, major

depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder and severe anxiety disorders are

real illnesses,

 *  Treatment for mental illness works, if accessible - treatment efficacy

rates for most severe mental illnesses exceed those for heart disease and

diabetes,

 *  There is simply no scientific or medical justification for insurance

coverage of mental illness treatment to be on different terms and

conditions than other diseases, and

 *  Discriminatory limits in health plans bankrupt families and place a

tremendous burden on taxpayers through higher expenditures for public

disability and health benefits, chronic homelessness and inappropriate

"criminalization" of mental illness.

Do NOT let this historic opportunity to pass mental illness parity pass

by.  Do NOT allow Congress to adjourn for the year without passing this

long overdue legislation.

Sincerely,

Laurie Cirrincione

The FCC is out to give away our media to the big corporate 5 and December 11th, 2007 is the deadline for you to let the FCC, Congress, and the White House know what you think; that’s when the FCC’s public comment period closes.

So, let's keep some of it for ourselves!

Sens. Byron Dorgan (D-N.D.), Trent Lott (R-Miss.) and several other senators introduced groundbreaking, bipartisan legislation that would hold the FCC accountable and put the people ahead of Big Media.

Ask Your Senator to Co-sponsor the

Media Ownership Act of 2007

TO ASK YOUR SENATOR TO CO-SPONSOR  GO HERE : http://action.freepress.net/campaign/ownership

This legislation would force the FCC to give the public a real voice in this process, and it would make the agency address the dismal state of female and minority ownership before changing any rules to unleash more media concentration. As you know, FCC Chairman Kevin Martin is trying to sneak through a massive giveaway to Big Media before the Bush administration leaves office.

Make Your Voice Heard:

Tell Your Senator to Sign On to S. 2332 Now

TO SIGN ON TO S 2332 GO HERE: http://action.freepress.net/campaign/ownership/8ksexx5ra63tiwt?

We are pulling out all the stops on this one, and you will play an important role. The FCC can't rule on media consolidation without first listening to the public and addressing the lack of diversity on our airwaves. Urge your senator to support this important bill and push for more voices in the media.

Re: File Code 2810, your October 19, 2007 letter to Jamie Sturgess, Rosemont Copper

Subject: Rosemont Plan Of Operations

This is an appeal that the Rosemont Mine not be approved. As a matter of basic justice and fairness, no governmental agency should approve a plan that will knowingly cause harm to our community in time of crisis and necessity.

The Green Valley aquifer does not have a sustainable water supply given current pumping rates in the Upper Santa Cruz River Basin. The deficit between pumping and recharge is approximately 40,000 Acre Feet (AF) excluding the Rosemont Mine. The level of the aquifer is dropping between 2 and 4 feet annually. No comprehensive plan exists to achieve sustainability. Central Arizona Project (CAP) water is our only possible source of renewable and sustainable water. The Rosemont mine will consume 5000 AF from our aquifer that otherwise could be available to mitigate our crisis.

Our crisis is now being recognized by the water stakeholders in our valley and by state and local governments, and by citizen’s action groups. The stakeholders consist of water providers, agriculture, mining and golf courses. A vision for mitigating our crisis is underway based on successful experience in California establishing watershed authorities of collaborating stakeholders.

Under no circumstances should a large water consumer such as Rosemont Mine be approved while Our Green Valley Aquifer is in a state of crisis and mitigating plans are proceeding.

Two important national political items:

1)   There is news flying around that Nancy Pelosi has said if she gets 10,000 hand-written letters, she will put Dennis Kucinich's  House Bill 333 to impeach Cheney  back on the table. Here's a link to the info-- it's important to send letter to her San Francisco office because DC letters are held up forever. Even if he is not impeached, the hearings will bring us some real gems for sure!

San Francisco, CA 94102

Phone: (415) 556-4862

2)   It's Fair Elections Action Week, and last Friday -- just in time -- Rep. John Larson sent a letter to the entire House of Representatives asking them to support his public financing bill to take big money out of politics.

Our Representatives heard from a colleague; now it's time they hear from us.

With wealthy campaign contributors and their lobbyists dominating Washington as never before, we've finally got a chance to turn the tide with public funding of campaigns -- it starts with this bill and with us.

Please make a call and tell Rep. Gabrielle Giffords to join Rep. Larson as an original cosponsor of the House Fair Elections Now Act.

ANOTHER GOOD LETTER IN THE TUCSON CITIZEN TODAY FOR YOUR ACTION

Boondoggle supplants '30s farm aid program

Every five years, Congress must vote on whether to extend the Depression-era farm subsidy program.

The Senate soon will vote on this outdated system, which costs us $16 billion a year.

Subsidies go to only one-third of farmers (with most money going to the top 20 percent of this select group) to subsidize beef, cheese and only a few crops, mainly corn, wheat, rice and soy beans.

These subsidies do not go to small farmers but rather to rich farming conglomerates and corporations.

More than half are paid to only seven states:  Iowa, Texas, Kansas, Nebraska, Indiana, Minnesota and Illinois.

Some legislators themselves are recipients of our largess, yet, under Congress' ethics rules, may still vote on this bill.

Scale down the program, refocus and end in five years.  Provide a new safety net available to many crops, including fruits and vegetables.

Start with better conservation of land and more opportunities for wildlife, meaning no "disaster" support in drought-prone Plains states where commercial farming isn't viable.

Abolish farm subsidies, which are designed during the Depression to assist poor farmers through tough times.  They are now a boondoggle.

Jaqueline O'Connor, Sierra Vista.

(So you can write your own letters.  Addresses and ways to reach the  US  House and Senate  are in the http://junesrag.pbwiki.com.   They will always be available even if you delete the lists I have sent you before.)

DONATIONS FOR PEOPLE LIVING IN THE DUMP IN NOGALES - ADDITIONAL INFORMATION.

SENDING CHECKS:

Regarding  inquiries for donating through checks:  They should be made out  to The Good Shepherd Church and on the memo line they should clearly write DUMP AID.  We appreciate this type of giving as the money will be spent in Mexico to buy the things needed thus assisting that economy.

DONATING OTHER THINGS:

The items requested  recently through emails sent out regarding food should be left at VALLEY PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH   -  ADDRESS:2800 South Camino Del Sol.  Items can be received between 9am and pm.  Items should be marked: FOR DUMP AID.  My contact at the church is Beth Ann but other staff there know of this project and will know where the items are to be stored.   Enter through the back door of the church and then go to the Kitchen door.  Ask for Beth Ann.  Especially needed is powdered milk,  the kind in individual packets only.  The bulk packages are hard to divide up.

THE MONEY IS NEEDED RIGHT AWAY.  THE BLANKETS, COATS AND GLOVES ARE LESS URGENT,  NEEDED THE FIRST WEEK IN DECEMBER.

Thanks from Marilyn Schoonover at the Good Shepherd Church.

Waterboarding and every other form of torture are wrong. Now we have a chance to make this crystal clear in U.S. law.

President Bush's nominee for Attorney General, Michael Mukasey, claims current law is not specific enough for him to stand up and stop President Bush's misguided policy. He won't have any more excuses after this legislation passes.

Here's what's happening. Senator Ted Kennedy introduced the Torture Prevention and Effective Interrogation Act to make one basic reform: apply the Army Field Manual -- which prohibits brutal techniques like waterboarding -- to all U.S. government interrogators, not just those in the Department of Defense. With this simple measure, we will clarify the law this Administration has so shamefully distorted.

Stand with us against torture:

http://www.democraticmajority.com/torture

When Congress passed the Detainee Treatment Act of 2005, we recognized that the Army Field Manual embodies our most responsible interrogation techniques. It contains rules that protect our own personnel from torture, ensure that we collect only credible information in pursuing terrorists, and prevent the secret abuse of detainees.

The Bush Administration, however, exploited a loophole -- the Act applies only to the Department of Defense, not to other agencies like the CIA. The Bush Administration continued to rely on false and deceptive legal justifications for the brutal techniques we've heard so much about.

One Department of Justice memo defined torture so narrowly that "it must be equivalent in intensity to the pain accompanying serious physical injury, such as organ failure, impairment of bodily function, or even death." This outrageous reasoning contradicts the military's own established standards, flunks the fundamental test of human rights, and endangers Americans serving throughout the world.

The U.S Commander in Iraq, General David Petraeus, has denounced brutal interrogation techniques and said, "history shows that they also are frequently neither useful nor necessary."

Senator Kennedy's legislation ensures that our government honors its commitment to the basic rights enshrined in the Geneva Conventions. It will protect both the values we cherish as a free society and the lives of our servicemen and women overseas.

Make your own statement that torture is not an American value:

http://www.democraticmajority.com/torture

The Torture Prevention and Effective Interrogation Act is an opportunity to restate our commitment to the security and ideals of our country. It is an opportunity to repair some of the damage done to our international reputation by the Abu Ghraib scandal and the abuses at Guantanamo, restore our nation's role as a beacon for human rights, fair treatment, and the rule of law. It is an opportunity to protect our own brave servicemen and women from such tactics.

It's a simple measure that's long overdue.

Now it's up to Congress to restore the rest of the government to the principles of law and justice that make this country great. Show your support for the Torture Prevention and Effective Interrogation Act today:

Working to End Torture

Observing Guantánamo hearings: ACLU attorney, Jamil Dakwar, is at Guantánamo Bay to observe the hearing of Omar Ahmed Khadr. Read his comments and observations about the hearing on the ACLU blog tomorrow.

Testifying before Congress: ACLU attorney, Amrit Singh, testified today before the House Judiciary Subcommittee looking into "enhanced" interrogation methods used on detainees in U.S. custody. Read more about her testimony.

Getting the facts: As a result of a Freedom of Information Act request filed by the ACLU, the third secret torture memo from Alberto Gonzales’ DOJ was revealed on Tuesday. Learn more about the documents and what they uncover.

Dear Friend,

ACLU attorney Jamil Dakwar is in Guantánamo Bay, Cuba serving as a human rights observer at the hearing of a Canadian citizen named Omar Ahmed Khadr. Khadr was only 15 years old when he was captured by U.S. forces in Afghanistan. This is his third hearing; the first two resulted in the charges against him being thrown out.

After nearly six years of disarray and uncertainty about how to prosecute the 320 remaining prisoners being held at Guantánamo Bay, the U.S. government has failed to complete a single trial. As the prisoners continue to languish without being charged or tried, one thing remains crystal clear: We cannot arbitrarily detain prisoners, deny them access to lawyers, and hold them indefinitely.

It is also clear that Congress cannot continue to put off taking action, they need to close Guantánamo Bay, restore habeas corpus and repudiate torture once and for all. In the meantime, you and I cannot wait for a change in Congress or the White House to demand that our leaders fix the damage done to the Constitution, our freedoms and our most fundamental American values over the last seven years.

That’s why we’re asking ACLU members to bring the discussion about these vital issues to their friends and family by hosting a screening of the powerful documentary, "Ghosts of Abu Ghraib," on or before December 10, International Human Rights Day. Sign up to host a screening.

We know for a fact that when they learn of the abuses being carried out in their name, the American people reject the use of torture and believe that our nation should uphold the rule of law. That is why the ACLU is calling on friends like you to help us educate and mobilize the public.

We won’t wait for ’08 to end torture, restore habeas corpus and close Guantánamo . We must act now. By hosting a screening of “Ghosts of Abu Ghraib,” you will increase awareness about the issues of torture, habeas corpus and due process. Raising awareness of these issues is essential as we fight to restore our Constitution and our most fundamental values.

All you need to host a viewing is a DVD player, a TV and guests. We’ll provide you with the tools you need to have a meaningful discussion.

Sign up to host a screening.

To think that it has taken almost six years for Khadr's hearing to take place underscores the fact that we can’t wait for ’08 to restore the Constitution; we must act now.

I hope you’ll consider hosting a viewing of this important documentary, and help build awareness about these fundamental issues. Thank you for your involvement and for standing up for freedom and the rule of law.

Sincerely,

Anthony D. Romero

Whom to contact to support impeachment or the attorney general candidate: the House Judiciary Committee

11/6/07   9:07 PM  from Jeff Latas PDA

You have to understand that there was a motion to table this by Hoyer and it
was defeated, soundly, by the majority of Republicans who thought the Dems
would never send it to committee since the number 2 Dem wanted it tabled.
The leadership of the Dems and the Repugs both had this backfire in their
faces. CNN is completely wrong with their analysis. This was a victory since
the leadership was trying to keep this from committee, the floor, and the
people.
Impeachment is now a living issue in Congress and official on the table,
something that the leadership thought would always be off the table.

URGENT: Contact the U.S. House Judiciary Committee and Ask for Impeachment of Cheney and Bush

Activism | Congress | Impeachment

1. Email Them All

You can Email Speaker Pelosi and all of the Judiciary Committee Members for whom we have identified good Email addresses all at once by signing this petition.

2. Phone and Email Them

Your message can be as simple as "Please impeach Cheney" or "Please support and cosponsor Congressman Kucinich's proposal to begin impeachment proceedings against Vice President Cheney."

You can quote John Conyers from John Nichols' book (pointed out by attentive reader Gordon Bennett): "I have a choice. I can either stand by and lead my constituents to believe I do not care that the president apparently no longer believes he is bound by any law or code of decency. Or I can act."

You can point to the Vermont Senate which passed a resolution on April 20, 2007, requesting impeachment. It is UNPRECEDENTED for Congress to ignore an impeachment request coming from a legislative body. It would be terrible for Congress to break this long-established precedent. When the Florida legislature requested the impeachment of Judge Swayne, Congress acted upon it. It came to the floor of the House as a highly privileged motion. The House required a committee to report on impeachment. When the committee reported it, impeachment was passed. When the Mississippi legislature requested the impeachment of Judge Bruin, Congress acted upon it. It came to the floor of the House as a highly privileged motion. The House required a committee to report on impeachment. Shortly later, a new judge was appointed, apparently after Judge Bruin died or resigned.

Don't forget Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi:

Reject An Attorney General Who Won't Up Hold The Law

At his senate hearing, Michael B. Mukasey, President Bush’s nominee

for attorney general, was plainly asked if the president is required

to obey federal statutes.

Not only did he refuse to answer that question with an unqualified

"Yes", the basis for his refusal was basically that a war president

can do whatever he likes, the catchall Constitution buster of the

current administration.

Mukasey Action Page: http://www.usalone.com/no_mukasey.php

Facebook Version:

http://apps.facebook.com/fb_voices/action.php?qnum=pnum723

We knew up front that there was no chance that the Cheney

administration would willingly tender a nominee who would even

contemplate holding them accountable in any way for their wholesale

defiance of the law. When the position of Gonzales became untenable,

they went ideological crony shopping and found a willing collaborator

in Mukasey. But that doesn't mean we're not supposed to vociferously

object.

While otherwise being diplomatically polite, former assistant U.S.

attorney, and professor of constitutional law at Yale Law School, Jed

Rubenfeld, editorialized in the New York Times this week that, "If

Judge Mukasey cannot say plainly that the president must obey a valid

statute, he ought not to be the nation’s next attorney general.

But of course Mukasey has already placed his compromised position in

the record. There is nothing left for him to do now but try to snake

around his real character, as some judicial nominees we could

mention, who implemented their full, hardcore, right wing agendas

only after confirmation.

Update: Even as we were starting to transmit this alert, a new

controversy surfaced around the Mukasey testimony, when he would not

say whether he believed that waterboarding qualified as torture. What

part of almost drowning someone, and sometimes actually drowning

them, doesn't he get? Even if torture yielded good intelligence,

which it does not, we are not interested in becoming a nation of

international war criminals.

Mukasey Action Page: http://www.usalone.com/no_mukasey.php

Facebook Version:

http://apps.facebook.com/fb_voices/action.php?qnum=pnum723

Members of the Senate are even now speaking out in opposition to this

flatly unacceptable nominee. Please join them. We need to encourage

those who are speaking their conscience. If the Senate can reject

torture 90-9, they can certainly reject this "see no torture"

nominee, who would determine that the president does not have to obey

that law, which he had already acted to abort with a contradictory

signing statement in signing it at all.

Even now, some sources are suggesting Alberto Gonzales is likely to

be prosecuted for his perjury before Congress in the purge of any

U.S. Attorney who could be politically corrupted. That's what we the

people get when Congress does not demand an attorney general who

isn't totally beholden to the White House. This time we expect them

to do a better job of protecting us.

There can be no redemption for Mukasey. Our job is to keep throwing

them back, and not tire, until and unless we get one who will actual

follow the law without equivocation.

Please take action NOW, so we can win all victories that are supposed

to be ours, and forward this alert as widely as possible.

If you would like to get alerts like these, you can do so at

NAFTA AND PERU:

Sometime during this next week, please help with this important action by calling two AZ U.S. Representatives.

If you are a fair trade supporter, it will interest you to know that the Peru NAFTA expansion is coming up for a vote next week, as early as November 5th.  The deal could allow Citibank to demand millions in compensation from impoverished Peru if the country reverses its failed social security privatization.  (This is more big corporate takeover!)

This is immoral, outrageous - and a dangerous precedent!  We need to keep social security out of "free trade" deals!!!

The two Arizona Members of Congress that have not yet decided how to vote on the Peru Free Trade Agreement are

U.S. Rep. Harry Mitchell and U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords.

They need a call from all of you in Arizona so they will know how we want them to vote.  If you are in either of their Districts (and therefore their constituent) it is especially important that you call them.

This is urgent and we will tell you more details about it below.

We urge you to 1. Call the DC office of these two Members of Congress - see the phone numbers below.  Ask to speak to the Legislative Aide who deals with trade issues. If you get voicemail, leave a message and ask for a call back.

Urge them vote against the Peru NAFTA expansionbecause it contains provisions that could make it difficult for Peru to reverse its failed social security privatization. Americans overwhelmingly rejected the Bush administration's proposal to privatize our social security system here in the United States. It would be hypocritical — and a very bad precedent — to lock in Peru's failed social security privatization by allowing such provisions to remain in the proposed Peru FTA. No trade agreement should ever have rules that affect government policy on social security.

NAFTA Expansion Vote Next Week: Citibank Vs. Social Security

Take action! The Peru NAFTA expansion is coming up for a vote next week. The deal could allow Citibank to demand millions in compensation from impoverished Peru if the country reverses its failed social security privatization. This is immoral, outrageous - and a dangerous precedent. We need to keep social security out of "free trade" deals.

Dear Fair Trade Supporter,

There may be a vote on the Peru NAFTA Expansion as early as November 5th - next week!

The proposed Bush expansion of NAFTA to Peru contains frightening provisions that could lock Peru into a privatized social security system similar to the Bush proposal that Democrats successfully fought last Congress. The main beneficiary of the provision seems to be Citibank, the largest shareholder in ProFuturo AFP, a company authorized to compete against Peru's national social security system.

If a lot of members of Congress vote for the Peru "free trade agreement" (FTA) containing this outrage, it could set a dangerous precedent for Social Security policies here at home. Congress needs to hear that Social Security has no business in a trade agreement.

That's why we need to demand that our representatives and senators oppose the Peru FTA. To do this, we need to get a quick       5,000 signatures on the following petition to the U.S. Congress.

(Note by Joy:  Please sign the petition through the link below.)

Please sign the petition on social security and trade - and forward it to your friends! http://action.citizen.org/campaign.jsp?campaign_KEY=11998

Petition Statement

Dear Congress:

As if any agreement expanding NAFTA is not offensive enough, it's absolutely outrageous that the proposed U.S.-Peru "free trade agreement" contains provisions that could make it difficult for Peru to reverse its failed social security privatization. I urge you vote against the Peru NAFTA expansion.

Sign the petition here: http://action.citizen.org/campaign.jsp?campaign_KEY=11998

How does this work? If the widely unpopular Peruvian social security privatization were reversed, the investment chapter in the Peru FTA could empower foreign investors that provide private retirement accounts in Peru - like Citibank - to demand compensation from the Peruvian government in UN and World Bank tribunals for "nationalizing" their investment.

Last week, Public Citizen joined dozens of Social Security advocacy organizations and sent a letter (PDF) to the U.S. Congress urging the defeat of the Peru FTA because of the dangerous precedent it sets by elevating the profits of Citibank above the survival of the poor and elderly in Peru. The Miami Herald covered this important story, and concern is rising in the U.S. Congress.

We are gaining momentum, but with only a week left before the vote, we have to make sure that every member of Congress - and most especially the Democrats who defended social security here in the U.S. - get an avalanche of emails and calls.

Sign the petition here: http://action.citizen.org/campaign.jsp?campaign_KEY=11998

And then forward this email to your friends!

Thank you for taking action!

The Bush administration today took another step to undermine face-to-face diplomatic negotiations between the United States and Iran and effectively increase the likelihood of war.

By imposing sweeping new sanctions against more than half of the current members of the Iranian cabinet and nearly 30 percent of the parliament, the administration effectively blocked anyone in the U.S. from having contact with much of the political leadership in Iran. The sanctions could also limit U.S. contact with people in other countries who deal with these Iranian leaders. The sanctions apply to people who are or have been members of an elite part of the Iranian military.

The U.S. campaign to address disputes over Iran's nuclear program through threats and sanctions has produced no results and, arguably, has made things worse. Instead of learning from these failures, the U.S. is continuing with this policy. The administration may intend nothing more than increased pressure on Iraq, but we at FCNL are increasingly worried that the confrontation between U.S. and Iran could get out of control and erupt into deadly violence.

Many current and former U.S. political and military leaders, the bipartisan Iraq Study Group, and FCNL agree that diplomatic negotiations, not more threats, are necessary to decrease the chances of a war between the U.S. and Iran. Yet the Bush administration is moving in the opposite direction. The new sanctions are part of an escalating pattern of confrontation between the U.S. and Iran. Three days ago, Vice President Dick Cheney threatened Iran with "serious consequences" for defying the U.S. Last week, President Bush warned that the confrontation could lead to "World War III.

Iran is making progress in accounting for past uranium enrichment programs, according to the International Atomic Energy Agency, which sends inspectors every month to review Iran's nuclear program. Israeli and U.S. intelligence agencies say that, even if Iran is pursuing nuclear weapons, the country is years away from having the capacity to build them. Yet the Bush administration, with support from Congress, is ratcheting up a confrontation that could lead to war:

The Dream Act

As many of you probably know, the DREAM act was defeated today. I checked the AZStar online to read the article and found 77 comments. The comments are hateful, even vitriolic. Out of the huge number of comments (77) to this article, there was only 1 that spoke up for the children! I tried to log a comment about the need for compassion and common sense and to cite the fact that the first young man to die in Iraq was the son of an “illegal” alien who had hoped that his service would be a path to citizenship but for some reason, the site is not letting me in.

Where are the OTHER comments? Why are there no letters from advocates for children? Anyone reading the reactions to this news story would think that ALL Americans are anti-child, anti-immigration racists.

Could you please email the link to anyone you think would care: http://www.azstarnet.com/dailystar/208051

If we could just take a few minutes to respond, at least the comments would look a bit more balanced. Or write a letter to the Editor…

Momentum Builds Against Telecom Immunity

The Bush-Cheney administration and its Republican allies in Congress want to grant retroactive legal immunity to telecom companies that assisted in the administration's illegal warrantless spying on Americans.

Advocates, activists, bloggers and regular citizens alike are creating a groundswell against telecom immunity, but will senators listen to the people and show some backbone?

By letting telecommunications companies off the hook for past wrongdoing, Congress would be pulling the plug on several pending lawsuits by customers who feel their rights were violated, and the Bush-Cheney administration would get to keep buried important information about the extent of its illegal spying programs.

In an effort to advance the bill containing immunity, the White House this week agreed to release legal documents about the NSA's domestic surveillance to the ranking member from each party on the Senate Judiciary Committee. No senator should let the White House's new willingness to disclose a limited number of documents undercut efforts to stop this bill.

If you have not already e-mailed your senators to urge them to reject telecom immunity, please do so now.

The FCC is up to its old tricks again.

They want to set new media ownership rules without any public input -- just like they did in 2003.  The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) won't tell us exactly what the new rules would do, but every indication is that they'll let Big Media get even bigger.

Light a fire under Congress

Tell them to stop the FCC's secret Big Media plan

Senator Byron Dorgan said of the FCC's secretive plan: "There is going to be a firestorm of protest, and I will be carrying the wood."

Can you be the spark? Tell Congress to step in and demand that the public have a say in the media ownership debate.

There are still a number of independently-owned television stations, radio stations and newspapers where you and I can find information and opinions that aren't always covered by the corporate-owned Big Media outlets.  But their future independence is in doubt if these rule changes go through.

The health and vibrancy of our democracy depends on a diversity of voices.  We must ensure that independent voices aren't silenced by the disappearance of independent media outlets.  We can't allow more media monopolies.

We demand that the FCC reveal their plan for media ownership to the American people.  And we demand that we have enough time to review it and submit our response to it.  We will not take "no" for answer.

Therefore, we are urgently calling for Congressional hearings into the FCC's plans for media ownership and we need your help.  Please contact your Representative today!

We need to have public hearings in the next few weeks -- before Congress leaves for holiday recess -- to fully investigate and reveal the FCC's plans for media consolidation.  Time is short.  Let's do everything we can to spark that grassroots firestorm.

Thanks for all you do.

Sincerely,

Bob Edgar

June's comment to the following:  Why did Nancy Pelosi condemn Pet Stark for his justified attack on the Republicans and the Administration?  Is she trying to make all those with some real spine and heart into chicken Democrats who try to "make nice" with Bush and his fellow outlaws?  Why not copy and email the message below to Nancy Pelosi at    Americanvoices@mail.house.gov and let her know that "making nice" is not the way to treat bullies or Republicans.

------

Once in a rare while a member of Congress will speak the plain truth without equivocation. Action Page: http://www.usalone.com/condemnation.php And when Pete Stark stood up to accuse the president of the United States of having no conscience about the deaths of the thousands of valiant troops he sent on a criminal war mission (for his "amusement" Stark said), while at the same time stealing the medicines out of the mouths of babes, not a word was voiced in protest by the Republicans present in the moment. There was only a mild generalized statement from the chair about avoiding personal references to the president. And the reason there was not a peep of actual outrage when Stark spoke those indicting words (that they are so howling about now), is that they knew in what was left of their hearts, that it was all shamefully true. How unlike the instant and unanimous reaction of the Democrats, when mean Jean Schmidt called John Murtha a coward for wanting to bring our troops home from the senseless slaughter, shouting at the chair to take her words down. And did Schmidt sincerely apologize for anything? Of course not. No Republican ever apologizes unless forced to. They just blame the media for accurately reporting their words, and blame our ears for hearing what they said and meant. So let us be clear. What Pete Stark said was not over the line. It was not over the top, and there was absolutely nothing wrong with Stark's choice of words. We are talking about a president who, when he was not being obstinately surly, has snickered his way through every press conference since he lied us into invading Iraq. We are talking about a president who was making funny faces into the camera in the seconds before he went live on the air to announce the assault. And who, with the raucous approval of the entire media press corps, thought those lies were just a laugh riot in hindsight. But in an attempt to again shut up any courageous voice of dissent, the right wing noise machine is trying after the fact to drum up messages of condemnation. So they want a condemnation do they? Well we'll give them one. This action page will send your personal message on the subject, "We condemn the entire Republican leadership." Action Page: http://www.usalone.com/condemnation.php We condemn the Republican leadership for mercilessly obstructing every congressional action of merit, even where that action was supported by the overwhelming majority of the American people, as in their engineering of the failure to override the veto of SCHIP (latest poll 81% supporting). We condemn the Republican leadership for resorting to filibusters at a historic record pace, since they lost the majorities in Congress which majorities they had done nothing with but abuse. We condemn the Republican leadership for doing nothing to hold the White House accountable for their lies and shredding of the Constitution, through illegal wiretaps, torture and all, because of their greed for political power, not allowing even investigations in these matters. We condemn the Republican leadership for using our troops as political props, while exploiting their suffering and death for the profit of their war profiteer contributors. We condemn the Republican leadership for their cynical and sinful hypocrisy in being the most corrupt and scandalous pack of thieves who have ever held national office, now resigning at an unprecedented clip (or reneging on the promise to do so), all the while posturing to their gullible diehard supporters as the most righteous. And we condemn the Republican leadership for seeking to hold others to a standard of decorum that they themselves grossly and repeatedly violate with the most hateful and false negative attack ads that have ever besmirched the American political discourse. We tried ourselves to call our members of Congress on Friday by phone to offer messages of support for Stark. Randi Rhodes was giving out the toll free Congressional phone numbers on the air for this purpose, bless her heart. But the answering machines were all full, we presume mostly with those words of encouragement. Action Page: http://www.usalone.com/condemnation.php Well we need to do more. But the only way you are going to be able to get through to Washington this weekend is by email, which is what the action page above will send to all your members of Congress at once. We need every living, breathing activist we've got to submit that action page and tell them we've had it. Enough. You will not back us down with trumped up attacks on our heros. You're going to pass SCHIP again just the way it is, and make the override go the other way if necessary. The action page sends nothing but the stated subject line. Add your own choice words about whatever issues you are most upset about, whether it's the occupation, SCHIP, no immunity for law breaking telecoms, no attack on Iran, or anything else. We want their email inboxes stuffed by Monday morning. We want their latest fake outrage to backfire on them in the biggest way. We need to flood them with emails this weekend like this is the biggest issue that ever was. Because it is. And the issue is this . . . We Will Not Back Down Not an inch. Never again. We win this issue, we win them all. We the people are running the show from now on. Let's show them how we respond to their calls for condemnation of Stark. We condemn THEM, not Stark. In numbers like they've never seen. And then we can start passing some meaningful legislation around here, over the president's smirking objection if necessary. If you want to do more, email all your friends from the same action page and encourage them to speak out too. We almost got the first override the first time. With 81% of the American people on our side now, is the time to pour it on, the cable news talking fluff heads be damned. Please take action NOW, so we can win all victories that are supposed to be ours, and forward this alert as widely as possible. If you would like to get alerts like these, you can do so at http://www.usalone.com/in.htm Or if you want to cease receiving our messages, just use the function at http://www.usalone.com/out.htm usalone126b:99414 Powered by The People's Email Network Copyright 2007, Patent pending, All rights reserved

Free Press Action Alert

Dear June,

The FCC's Kevin Martin wants to make quick work of media ownership limits.
Tell Congress to hold hearings »

It's rare for media reform issues to make the front page... but they did today.

This morning, the New York Times revealed that FCC Chairman Kevin Martin is rushing through a plan to rewrite media ownership rules, letting the biggest media companies control even more local outlets. And he's doing it without giving the public a chance to respond. The rules could take effect as early as December.

Tell Rep. Giffords, Sen. Kyl and Sen. McCain
to stop the FCC before it's too late

It's outrageous that Martin would try to pull a fast one on Americans. Fortunately, some members of Congress are fighting back. Sen. Byron Dorgan of North Dakota said, "If the chairman intends to do something by the end of the year, then there will be a firestorm of protest and I'm going to be carrying the wood." It's time to help Senator Dorgan light the fire.

The FCC tried to do this in 2003, and nearly 3 million people rose up to say no. Our protest forced Congress and the courts to reject the FCC's decision.

But despite overwhelming public opposition, Chairman Martin is trying to sneak through this massive giveaway before the Bush administration leaves office. We can put a stop to Martin's secret plan by reminding your elected officials that they must hold the FCC accountable.

Don't let Martin get away with rewriting the rules:
Demand that Congress hold the FCC accountable

We don't have much time — we need Congress to act now before it's too late. Don't make Sen. Dorgan carry the wood all alone.

Onward,

Alexandra Russell

While I am a Unitarian Universalist,  our congregation is very sympatico with the United Church of Christ and I have signed their petition for peace.  I hope that you too,  regardless of your religions affiliation or lack of it, will sign this petition.  June Wortman

United Church of Christ: Take Action!

Thank you!

In June, when the UCC's Collegium of Officers presented our Pastoral Letter on the Iraq War, little did we know that – within four months – nearly 64,000 UCC members would join us as co-signers. What a remarkable achievement.

Last week, the Rev. Linda Jaramillo and I delivered our statement, along with your signature, to the offices of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, and House Minority Leader David Boehner. Each of their representatives respectfully received us and our heavy boxes of petitions.

Later, at the White House, we were not as successful. Since we were not able to have a face-to-face meeting with the public liaison office as we had hoped, Linda and I decided to take our place in a no-protest zone near the White House gate, where we ignored three police orders to move and were arrested. Our public witness for peace was an expression of solidarity with the thousands who had signed the Pastoral Leader and were praying with us for peace.

Our effort in Washington, we realize, was largely symbolic. It alone neither rattled the White House nor convinced the Congress. And even our time in custody was brief. After each paying a $100 fine, we were released two hours later.

Yet, our effort was one powerful witness expressed alongside 63,797 others – faithful UCC members who are have publicly committed to joining protest to prayer to end this war. Our petition-delivery attempt was one step among thousands that will ultimately result in a new day of peace for the people of Iraq.

Our campaign will not end until the war ends, so we encourage your continued participation. We are still gathering signatures, and additional coordinated actions are being planned.

Today, we make a special request that you act in support of legislation before the U.S. House that could affect hundreds of thousands of refugees now fleeing war-torn Iraq. With support of the UCC/Disciples' Global Ministries, Church World Service has mounted this advocacy effort.

Again, thanks for your faithful expression for peace.

Sincerely,

The Rev. John H. Thomas

P.S. Remember, we’re still actively collecting signatures. We’d still like to reach 100,000 by the end of the year. Encourage your friends to join the campaign.
